This is my response to a blog post by Stuart Parker.
I'm a little confused by the inclusion of AC/DC under the "hair metal" label. They never wore makeup, and other than the lead guitarist, who wore a schoolboy uniform, the other band members all wore t-shirts and jeans. They had long hair, but it wasn't teased or overly styled. AC/DC is a straightforward heavy blues-rock band who always shied away from being labeled as glam or metal.
Twisted Sister is, absolutely, hair metal and they did wear garish makeup. However, they never intended for anyone to view them as being female. Part of the gag was that they were obviously male.
From a female perspective, the glossy Penthouse images were utterly destructive to a decidedly ordinary-looking teenage girl. As a teenager, my goal as soon as I turned 18 was to get breast implants. Fortunately, I came to my senses, realizing that even my modest endowment had a tendency to get in my way. It would have been a lot worse if some unscrupulous plastic surgeon had granted my wish and implanted immobile, asteroid-sized silicone globules in my chest.
